When Is the Best Time to Take Maternity Photos?
Pregnancy is such a special journey — full of anticipation, change, and beauty.
Every expecting mama glows in her own unique way, and a maternity photoshoot is the perfect way to celebrate that moment before your baby arrives.
But one of the most common questions we hear is:
“When is the best time to take maternity photos?”
Let’s explore how to find the perfect timing — so you feel comfortable, radiant, and capture that magical glow beautifully.
The Ideal Window: Between 28 and 34 Weeks
Most photographers and stylists recommend scheduling your maternity photoshoot between week 28 and week 34 of pregnancy (around month 7–8).
Why?
Your bump has a beautiful, round shape that photographs perfectly.
You still have enough energy to move comfortably and enjoy the experience.
Many pregnancy symptoms (like swelling or fatigue) haven’t peaked yet.
Of course, every mama’s journey is different — some bumps show earlier, others later. If your pregnancy is progressing smoothly and you feel great, this window will help you capture your glow at its best.
Early Bump Photos: 20–26 Weeks
If you have a smaller bump or you’re planning to use the photos for a baby shower invitation or gender reveal, a second-trimester photoshoot (around weeks 20–26) can also be perfect.
Your belly is starting to show, you still feel light and active, and it’s an ideal moment for more casual, playful photos.
Lighter fabrics, sitting poses, and outdoor shoots look beautiful at this stage.
Later Photoshoots: 35 Weeks and Beyond
Some mamas prefer capturing the very end of pregnancy — and that’s beautiful, too!
If you’re shooting around week 35–37, just make sure you plan extra time for breaks and comfort.
Tip: Choose dresses with stretch or wrap styles for easy movement, and bring a cozy blanket or wrap in case you need to rest between poses.
These late-stage photos often have an incredibly emotional, intimate energy — a quiet celebration before meeting your baby.
Plan ahead — dresses book quickly around these peak photoshoot times, especially spring and autumn.
